This course examines the processes through which individuals acquire their first and additional languages, with an emphasis on the implications for teaching multilingual learners in PK-12 classrooms. Candidates explore major theories of language acquisition, linguistic, cognitive, social, and cultural influences on language development, and the relationship between first language proficiency and second-language learning. The course also examines bilingualism, biliteracy, multilingual identity, and the developmental characteristics of English learners across varying educational contexts. Candidates apply research-based principles of language acquisition to instructional planning and decision-making that support equitable outcomes for multilingual learners.
