Advance Your Teaching Career with an ESL Endorsement
Flexible, affordable graduate-level coursework designed for working educators, with endorsement pathways built around the requirements of your state.
English learners are part of classrooms across the country, in every grade level and nearly every subject area.
But ESL endorsement requirements aren’t the same everywhere.
Course requirements, credit hours, field experiences, testing requirements, and even the name of the credential can vary from state to state.
That’s why MTI starts with one simple question:
Where do you teach?
We'll show you the coursework, university partner(s), cost, timeline, and requirements that apply to your state.
Don't see your state? Ask us about your state.
A Clearer Path to Your ESL Endorsement
Earning an ESL-related endorsement can be confusing.
Every state establishes its own requirements, and those requirements don’t always translate neatly into a simple list of courses.
MTI helps make the process easier.
We evaluate state requirements and develop clear endorsement pathways so educators can better understand what they need, which coursework applies, and how to move forward.

Built for Teachers. By Teachers.
We know what going back to school can feel like when you’re already teaching full time.
Lesson planning. Grading. Meetings. Family responsibilities. And everything else that comes with being an educator.
You shouldn’t have to reorganize your entire life just to add a valuable credential to your teaching license.
That’s why MTI’s endorsement pathways are designed with working educators in mind.
Flexible Learning
Coursework designed to fit around the schedule of a working educator. Specific formats may vary depending on your state pathway and university partner.
Practical Coursework
Graduate-level coursework focused on knowledge and strategies educators can use with English learners in today’s classrooms.
Affordable Pathways
Adding an endorsement shouldn’t require the cost of earning another full degree. MTI works to provide practical, affordable pathways for educators seeking additional credentials.
University Graduate Credit
Depending on the state, applicable graduate coursework is provided through MTI’s university partnerships, including Andrews University and Colorado State University Pueblo.
Why Add an ESL Endorsement?
English learners aren’t taught only by ESL teachers.
They’re in elementary classrooms, middle schools, high schools, special education programs, content-area classrooms, and nearly every educational setting.
Adding an ESL-related endorsement can help educators:
Better Serve English Learners
Develop a stronger understanding of language acquisition and research-based strategies for supporting multilingual learners.
Expand Career Opportunities
Increase your versatility as an educator and prepare for additional teaching roles involving English learners.
Strengthen Your Current Classroom
Use what you learn immediately, even if you don’t plan to become a dedicated ESL teacher.
Earn Graduate-Level Credit
Earn university graduate credit that may also have value for salary advancement or future educational goals, subject to applicable district and university policies.
One Goal. Different State Pathways.
There is no single national ESL endorsement.
Depending on where you teach, the credential may be called:
ESL ESOL TESOL ELL EL CLD
And the differences go beyond the name.
One state may require six courses while another requires eight. Some states require particular content areas, clinical experiences, examinations, or other documentation.
That’s why MTI doesn’t try to fit every teacher into the same program.
We start with what your state requires.
MTI evaluates state requirements and develops pathways using coursework that aligns with those requirements.
Depending on your state, your pathway will include graduate-level coursework offered through Andrews University, Colorado State University Pueblo, or an appropriate combination of coursework based upon the state’s requirements.
Once you select your state, we’ll show you what your pathway looks like.

Why Teachers Choose MTI
We Help Make a Complicated Process Simpler.
Teacher licensure can be confusing.
Requirements vary by state. Terminology changes. University course titles don’t always match state terminology. And it isn’t always obvious which courses satisfy which requirements.
You shouldn’t have to figure everything out on your own.
Instead of simply giving teachers a catalog of courses, MTI is building state-specific endorsement pathways designed to make the process easier to understand.
With your state pathway, you’ll be able to see:
- ✓What your state requires
- ✓How the coursework aligns with those requirements
- ✓Which university partner provides the applicable graduate credit
- ✓Which courses you’ll take
- ✓Total program cost
- ✓Estimated completion time
- ✓Field experience requirements, when applicable
- ✓Testing requirements, when applicable
- ✓Other state-specific requirements you should know about
Less searching. Less guessing. A clearer path forward.
Graduate-Level Coursework from University Partners
MTI works with university partners to provide graduate-level coursework for educators pursuing additional credentials.
State requirements differ, so the university coursework included in an endorsement pathway may also differ.
Depending on the state, a pathway may incorporate coursework through:
and/or
The teacher’s state-specific page will clearly identify the coursework, university partner, graduate credit, and transcript information associated with that pathway.
Ready to Find Your Pathway?
You don’t need to start by deciphering state regulations or guessing which courses you’ll need.
Start with one simple question:
Where do you teach?
We'll show you the coursework, university partner(s), cost, timeline, and requirements that apply to you.

We’re continuing to expand endorsement pathways for educators across the country.
Teacher licensure and endorsement requirements are established by individual state licensing agencies and are subject to change. Available pathways, university partners, coursework, credit requirements, costs, and program formats may vary by state. Educators should review the applicable state-specific information and licensing requirements before enrolling.
